Online security is the skill of recognizing threats online and figuring out ways to avoid these threats. This includes keeping personal information private, avoiding malware, and being aware of illegal or harmful content.

As students spend more of their time and energy online, it’s vital to be aware of security online. They should know that there are real dangers to their privacy and security such as cyberbullying and identity theft. They must also be aware of how reckless or careless Internet actions can result in serious consequences. For instance the case of a New Hampshire politician lost his job due to inappropriate images and negative comments about his opponents on social media.

When they’re playing, shopping or chatting with a friend, there are a lot of things that could be wrong. For instance, it’s not difficult to click on a malicious link within an email text message or online advertisement that can infect a device with malware. Once an insulting or embarrassing comment, image or video has been posted and is not easy to remove.

To help children understand the crucial issues pertaining to cyber safety, teachers can incorporate a variety of engaging activities into their classes. Students can create an animated digital cartoon about the dangers of bullying or meet someone online in person to spark discussions in the classroom and build critical thinking and media literacy. Students can also learn about cyber security by making an imaginary article.
